The William & Mary Wind Ensemble is pleased to announce our first ever international tour to China in May 2015. This opportunity has been made possible by invitation of the US-China Cultural and Educational Foundation and with support from the WM Department of Music.  Members of the Wind Ensemble will share music with a completely new audience, it also provides incredible cultural and service opportunities. The tour will include performances of both classic literature and world premieres in renowned venues. The WEWE will also serve as musical mentors to local underserved school children, and participate in cultural immersion experiences. While one goal is to provide students with an unforgettable adventure, we also strive to build on William & Mary’s reputation for  international engagement by bringing a uniquely American wind ensemble art form to Chinese audiences. Our program will feature world premieres by WM Composer Brian Hulse and solo trumpet and wind ensemble works performed by Virginia Symphony Principal Trumpeter and WM Trumpet faculty David Vonderheide. Degree credit will be available through the Reves Center for International Studies.

Student benefits go beyond the musical aspects of this trip. Chinese Studies will gain the opportunity to use the language and experience the culture they have been learning about. For our International Relations and Public Policy majors, exploring a foreign country will add a new perspective to their academic studies at the College. Those studying business can study the effect of culture on business and advertising efforts across the globe. History students will be exposed to a culture dating back over 5,000 years, and our more technologically-centered students will have the opportunity to observe a new culture of innovation and product development, along with the digital and online curation of all our concert activities. Our itinerary includes:

  • The Great Wall of China
  • The Forbidden City
  • Bejing University
  • The Chinese Jade Museum
  • Bejing Children’s Palace
  • Local Elementary Schools
  • Shandong Concert Hall
